We are happy to report that work on the Street Performance ordinance continues to move forward. We’ve had overwhelming support both in drafting the language and developing the strategy for getting it in front of the City Commission from a  number of people, but we’d be remiss without mentioning a few key people. Big up to Justin Wales of Carlton Fields Jordan Burt, Leah Weston, otherwise known as DJ Swanky, and Marta Viciedo and Irvans Augustin of the Urban Impact Lab.

Last week, we met with the Miami Arts and Entertainment Council to discuss the ordinance effort. The A&E Council is an interesting group of artists, lawyers and business executives appointed by commissioners from each district. They are tasked with promoting the growth of the arts in the City of Miami and making recommendations to the commission to support that mission. They unanimously agreed and support the effort to have street performance recognized as a protected right and we thank them for their early support. Seems like everyone wants art in our streets!

We’ll soon be publishing the proposed ordinance here. The next step will be launching a full-fledged campaign to gain individual commissioner support. We hope you’ll join us in writing your commissioner in support of the ordinance when the time comes, but not juuuuuust yet!

This Thursday evening the Buskerfest organizers are meeting at Lagniappe House to brainstorm for Buskerfest Miami 2014 – coming to you later this year. Feel free to stop by and say hello if you happen to be in the hood.

Much love,

the BF Team
